Great progress was made on the new Beloit Public Library project in July. Conceptual designs for both the interior floor plans and exterior look of the new library
were approved by the Library board. The library will occupy the former J. C. Penney building at the old Beloit Mall location, now know as the Eclipse Center.
Highlights of the library plan include a quiet reading room, a 35 seat computer center, special activity center for children, a 200 seat meeting room, a young adult area for teens,
and a cafe area with tables and vending machines.
Said Library Board President Carl Balson, "Beloit area citizens are going to be thrilled with the new library. It has a fresh, inviting atmosphere with special attractions for
all ages."
Budget estimates remain within the projected guidelines with an early estimate of $8.9 million, with the City of Beloit paying about 85% of the costs and the remaining 15% to be earned by donations. A fund raising committee is being organized by the library; the precise amount to be raised will be
determined when the budget is
further refined. Construction of the library is scheduled through the year 2008 with a projected grand opening in late 2008 or early 2009.
